Darcy Marquardt was born in Vancouver and raised in Richmond, BC and grew-up playing a lot of different sports: from softball to figure skating to floor hockey to rugby to swimming; Darcy loved to play sports and she tried them all. At the age of 8 years old, Darcy watched the figure skaters at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary and then started to dream about going to the Olympic Games herself...

It wasn’t until she graduated from high school and went away to the University of Victoria that she discovered the sport of Rowing, the one that would ultimately take her to the Olympics. Darcy is now a three-time Olympian; competing in Athens (2004), Beijing (2008) and most recently in London (2012), where she and her teammates won the silver medal in the women’s eights category. Recently retired from elite rowing, Darcy is putting her communication skills, learned through sport and her Bachelor’s degree in French and Psychology, to good use in researching her next career. In the meantime, she loves giving back to her community and wants to inspire future generations of healthy, active young people, and she is here today to do just that.

Her (Darcy Marquardt) stories as a young person related to our students and the fact that she is a local girl that made it to the Olympic podium made it more “real” for our students.
